If you drive on Bulgaria’s motorways or toll national roads in a car, van, camper, or an eligible combination, you need a valid vignette registered for your plate and period. A digital e-vignette replaces a windscreen sticker: you buy online, receive email confirmation, and enforcement uses your registration number against BGToll records.
Read the short country guide for travellers before you pay.
Select vehicle type (including trailer over 3.5 t if required), pick a vignette duration, set your validity start date, then enter plate country and registration in the correct format. Add an email for your receipt, review the summary, choose email delivery speed if offered, and pay with card.
A Bulgaria vignette covers the Bulgarian network included in the product you buy. When touring the European Union , each country has its own toll or vignette rules. A Bulgarian vignette does not replace Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, or Swiss products, or distance-based lorry tolls.
Plate, country, email, category, and start date are sent for registration. Correct typos before paying; after validity begins, changes follow operator rules. If checkout fails, you can adjust details and try again.
Expanded reference from national operator and roadside-marketing material: network coverage, exemptions, vehicle rules, flex-style services where mentioned, and list-price tables. Swiss pages also include separate tunnel and car-loading tables that are not covered by the annual vignette.
Tolls in Bulgaria are collected through a digital vignette via the BGToll payment system. The motorway vignette is linked to a vehicle registration number and can be bought online. You can pay using common online payment methods. A confirmation is sent to your e-mail address; some retailers also offer optional SMS confirmation for checkpoints.
In Bulgaria, a vignette is required on all motorways and national roads. In short, all motor vehicles (except motorbikes) are subject to the vignette obligation. In 2019, Bulgaria phased out the conventional sticker vignette and introduced the digital vignette.
A vignette is required for tolled motorway sections. Examples from national reference material:
| A1 (E80, E773) | Trakija: Sofia – Plovdiv – Stara Zagora – Burgas |

| A2 (E70, E79, E83, E772) | Hemus: Sofia – Botevgrad – Veliko Tarnovo – Shumen – Varna |

Bulgaria distinguishes motorways and national roads. Maximum speed on motorways is 140 km/h; on national roads it is 120 km/h. Important existing routes may be upgraded toward motorway standard. National roads typically have at least two lanes; many sections have no full emergency lane.

About 821 km of motorways were completed at the time of the source snapshot, of a total planned length of roughly 1,569 km (slightly more than half completed). Always verify current maps with BGToll before travel.
Two broad groups matter for the flat-rate vignette: vehicles under 3.5 tonnes laden weight, and trailers when the combination exceeds 3.5 t.
- All vehicles with a permissible total weight up to 3.5 t (passenger cars, camper vans, goods vehicles in that class, minibuses, pickups, vans, car with caravan within limit) need a vignette.
- Vehicles with fewer than four wheels (motorbikes and trikes) are exempt.
If your vehicle with trailer exceeds 3.5 t maximum permissible mass, you need an additional e-vignette for the trailer. The two validity periods do not have to match exactly. If the towing vehicle with trailer stays at or under 3.5 t, you do not need a separate trailer vignette.
As of 1 March 2020, if your vehicle without trailer exceeds 3.5 t maximum permissible mass, you pay a route-dependent toll via BGToll (distance, vehicle category, gross weight, axles, EURO emission class, typically with GNSS / OBU-style registration).
| Vehicle type | Total weight | Purchase class (weight category) |
|---|
| Lorries and campervans | Total weight < 12 t | Buy weight class 2 |
| Buses | Total weight < 12 t | Buy weight class 4 |
| Lorries and campervans | Total weight ≥ 12 t | Buy weight class 3 |
| Buses | Total weight ≥ 12 t | Buy weight class 5 |
Validity options for light vehicles and qualifying trailers include: 1 weekend, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 1 year. The product is valid through 23:59 on the last day of the selected period. Weekend vignettes run from Friday 12:00 through Sunday 23:59 of the chosen weekend. Annual vignettes cannot be registered retroactively and run one year from the chosen start of validity.
Official list prices are in euro; marketing copy may show GBP equivalents with a stated hourly refresh (example from source: 1.00 € = 0.87 £, last updated 14/05/2026). Independent portals may add a service fee shown at the last checkout step.
You can buy the Bulgarian vignette at border crossings, self-service terminals, or online. Online purchase is often the most convenient before travel.
Use Latin capitals and digits. Dots, commas, and spaces are normally not part of the stored plate format. German umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) must be entered as on the plate, not ASCII-transliterated; do not confuse letter O with digit 0. Example: a plate shown as FÜAB1230 must keep Ü. Wrong characters can lead to enforcement issues.
Some retailers normalize spacing and punctuation to national rules; German and Austrian plates still require the hyphen where it appears on the physical plate.
Driving without a valid e-vignette risks heavy fines. Motorways and national roads are monitored with video surveillance; the plate is checked against the National Toll Administration register.
If stopped without a valid vignette, fines in marketing copy ranged roughly £130–£865 depending on weight class; first offences may sometimes be settled with a compensation payment of about £31 plus buying a valid product the same day. Heavy vehicles over 3.5 t can face the upper end of the range. Always verify current penalty amounts with official sources.
In Bulgaria you cannot transfer a vignette to another vehicle, including broad “correction” of a registered vignette. Enter the correct plate and category before payment.
Normally the plate cannot be changed after purchase. Some resellers offer a “flex” style service: plate may be changeable any time before the first day of validity; after validity starts, changes follow strict operator rules or may be impossible.
Where a flex-style add-on is sold, postponing validity before the first valid day may be possible; without that option, dates follow what you confirmed at purchase.
- Vehicle owners with a certified reduction in earning capacity of at least 50%.
- Persons or families with children who have a permanent disability (under 18, or after secondary education up to age 20 per national rules) receiving a valid annual vignette each year where applicable.
- All vehicles with fewer than four wheels.
- Certain state vehicles (Ministry of Interior, National Guard, Armed Forces, emergency medical assistance, National Security Agency) per national law.
