Hungary digital vignette (e-Matrica) for motorways

Hungary tolls passenger and light commercial traffic through e-Matrica. Your digital vignette records category, plate, and validity for M-road networks subject to the product you buy.

Read the short country guide for travellers before you pay.

Checkout steps

Select D1, D1m, D2, or U, pick duration (including county or regional annuals if listed), set the validity start, enter Hungarian or foreign plate details, add email, review, and pay with card.

Heavy vehicles

Goods vehicles over 3.5 t generally use distance-based HU-GO instead of e-Matrica. This page is for light-vehicle vignette products only.

Category choice

Misclassified vehicles risk fines. When unsure, compare seat count and gross mass on your registration certificate with NTPS guidance before purchasing.

Country toll reference (full guide)

Expanded reference from national operator and roadside-marketing material: network coverage, exemptions, vehicle rules, flex-style services where mentioned, and list-price tables. Swiss pages also include separate tunnel and car-loading tables that are not covered by the annual vignette.

E-vignette Hungary

Hungary collects motorway tolls through the digital e-Matrica system. The vignette is linked to the registration number; confirmation is sent by e-mail and optionally SMS.

Toll motorways

Tolled motorways and expressways use the “M” designation. The M0 ring is central; tolled segments include connections between M3 and road 2, and between M5 and road 4, plus motorways M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M15, M19, M25, M30, M35, M43, M60, M70, M85 and M86.

New tolled sections (from 8 June 2025, reference)

  • M44 Kecskemét North – Szentkirály (Pest): Bács-Kiskun county vignette suffices; Pest county vignette only if no valid Bács-Kiskun vignette is held.
  • M44 Kecskemét North – Tiszaug/Tiszakürt (Bács-Kiskun): Bács-Kiskun county vignette required.
  • M44 Lakitelek/Tiszakécske – Szarvas/Szentes (Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok): that county vignette required.
  • M44 Szolnok/Martfű/Kunszentmárton – Békéscsaba-Gyula/Debrecen-Szeged (Békés): Békés county vignette required.
  • M85 Győr West – Sopron – border (Győr-Moson-Sopron): Győr-Moson-Sopron county vignette required.
  • National time-based vignettes remain valid on these newly tolled sections once you hold the correct county or national product.

Toll-free exceptions (examples)

  • M8, M31.
  • Pécs southwest bypass from M60 between roads 58 and 5826.
  • M9 between main road 6 and main road 51; M9 (sign main road 61) Kaposvár bypass.
  • M4 (sign main road 4) between Vecsés and the airport access (approx. km 19+550 to 20+518).
  • Selected M0 segments: between main road 1 and M5; between M4 (main road 4) and M3; Megyeri bridge (main road 11 to main road 2).

County vignettes

Hungary sells annual vignettes for individual counties (megye). A county vignette year follows the national vignette calendar (example from source: 1 January 2025 – 31 January 2026; if bought later, validity starts at purchase).

Counties available for county vignettes in reference material include: Bács-Kiskun, Baranya, Békés, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Budapest, Fejér, Csongrád-Csanád, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Komárom-Esztergom, M1 Region (Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Győr-Moson-Sopron), Nógrád, Pest, Somogy, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Tolna, Vas, Veszprém, Zala.

Regulations for cars, campervans, buses and trailers

Always check “F.1 Max. permissible mass” on your registration document. From 1 April 2024 the former B2 vignette class for buses was abolished; vehicles previously in B2 must use distance-based HU-GO lorry tolling instead.

The fee category glossary (D1, D1M, D2, B2 legacy description, U) is summarized in the tariff tables below together with list prices.

Prices and validity periods (summary)

Typical validity options: 1 day, 10 days, 1 month, 1 year, plus county and regional annual variants where sold. Prices are in Hungarian forint; marketing GBP used example rate 1.00 £ = 413 Ft (14/05/2026).

Toll regulations for lorries

Above 3.5 t (except where camper rules differ), Hungary uses distance-based HU-GO tolling by kilometres, weight, axles, road type, and emission class.

60-minute grace after accidental use

If you accidentally enter a tolled route and notice immediately, you may have about 60 minutes to buy a valid vignette without a fineconfirm current rules with the operator.

Enforcement

Compliance is checked mainly by video surveillance, often shortly after border crossings.

Can I transfer my Hungarian vignette?

Yes, under strict conditions: typically when the vehicle owner changes, or after write-off/theft, the e-vignette may move to another vehicle of the same toll class. Operator contact from reference: Tel +36 (36) 587-500, e-mail ugyfel@nemzetiutdij.hu.

Can I change my number plate at a later date?

Before validity: flex-style retailer products may allow plate changes before day one. During validity: small errors (up to three characters plus country once) may be corrected at National Toll Payment Services offices within 60 days from validity start, with documents; fee about HUF 1,470 (~£3.45 in source). Confusing digit 0 with letter O may be corrected free.

Can I postpone the start of validity after purchase?

Where flex services are sold, validity may be shifted any time before the first valid day; otherwise dates are fixed at purchase.

Which vehicles are exempt?

  • Hungarian Armed Forces and NATO-related public-order tasks.
  • Bodies managing the public road network, civil protection, transport authorities.
  • Bodies performing toll collection and monitoring.
  • Other bodies explicitly authorised to use the network without vignette.

Hungary e-vignette frequently asked questions

Answers about Hungarian e-Matrica categories D1, D1m, D2, and U, county and regional annual products, motorways marked M, and this checkout.

What are D1, D2, D1m, and U?

D1 covers passenger cars and camper vans up to 3.5 t with up to seven seats. D1m is motorcycles only. D2 covers vehicles with eight or nine seats, vans, and certain goods vehicles up to 3.5 t as described in your registration. U covers trailers for D2 combinations up to 3.5 t. Pick the line that matches your papers.

What are county or regional annual vignettes?

Hungary offers cheaper annual products limited to specific counties or regions (for example county-wide or M1 regional). They are only valid on tolled sections inside that territory. If you cross counties often, the national annual D1 or D2 product may be simpler.

Which roads need a vignette?

Most motorways and expressways labelled M (with published exceptions such as M8, M31, parts of M0, and selected bypass sections) require a valid e-Matrica for your category. Always verify the latest map before driving.

How do I receive my vignette?

After successful payment, confirmation is emailed to you. Optional faster email delivery may be offered at checkout. Keep the email as proof with your plate and validity.

Can I choose a start date?

Yes. Select the first calendar day of validity; it cannot be in the past. Ten-day and monthly products count from that day according to e-Matrica rules.

Do I need a vignette for a trailer?

If you use category D2 and tow a trailer up to 3.5 t, register a U vignette for the trailer in addition to the towing vehicle’s D2 vignette when rules require it.
